Outreach

"So neither he who plants nor he who waters is any at all, but God who gives the increase.

And he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
For we are fellow workers of God, you are the field of God, the building of God."

Shaul - 1 Corinthians 3:7-9

One of Yeshua's last words on this earth were charging the talmidim to spread the Gospel in preparation for His imminent return - this is one of the most important forms of outreach. We have charged to teach believers and unbelievers alike of the Way through both words and actions, being a light to the nations. God has given us multifarious ways of spreading the Word of repentance. Mothers, for example, are to raise strong believing children who can in turn proclaim to the world and their own families. Elders can guide the community as the Word is spoken. Some can prophesy while others can teach, and so forth. All believers can proclaim through denying their flesh and living in full commitment to the True One. In all these things, the Word of God is to be brought forth to people throughout the world. By no means are we exempt from Yeshua's declaration for it has yet to be accomplished! We believe that when the Word of Yeshua is brought forth to the whole world that He will return as He promised us He would. By no means do we believe that all we teach is perfect but we readily look forward to growing to the point that the Word may indeed be brought forth to all the nations.

We believe that while one form of outreach involves giving money and supporting worthy causes, it is important that we do more in the form of actions and service.

"My brothers, what use is it for anyone to say he has belief but does not have works? This belief is unable to save him. And if a brother or sister is naked and in need of daily food, but one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," but you do not give them the bodily needs, what use is it? So also belief, if it does not have works, is in itself dead." James 2:14-17

In Yeshua's parable, the rich men were not praised for giving out of their comfort while the poor widow was, for giving a fraction of that amount but out of her discomfort. If we give out of our surplus but do not act in the service of others, we are essentially hoarding our most valuable resources and not fulfilling the expectations placed upon us in the Scriptures. Effective outreach is about getting out of one's home and involving oneself in the fulfilling of these commandments.

Tithing, a common concept amongst mainstream congregations, is actually mentioned nowhere in the New Testament. In fact, it was explicitly meant for the Temple and the Levitical system.* Giving ten percent can nevertheless be a good guideline since Avraham used it outside the Levitical system**.

As Yeshua emphasized, our outreach will be primarily about protecting the orphans, widows, fatherless, and poor . Matthew 25:40: "And the King shall answer and say to them, 'Truly, I say to you, in so far as you did it to one of the least of My brothers, you did it to Me.'" The will to 'get one's hands dirty' (so to speak) should be an instrumental component of a believer's life. Dedication to furthering the Kingdom includes both finances and effort; together as a family our outreach will seek to engage ourselves with these important duties.

Widows All widows are to be honored. It is important and biblical that their family is to care for the widow and provide for her. A widow must be over 60 years old and having been the wife of one man and of good reputation as a mother and believer. The Hellenist widows were being overlooked and the talmidim appointed those to watch over them in Acts 6:1-5. It is important to hold widows in high regard and ensure their needs are met. Younger widows should consider marrying again by the grace of God in the case that He provides a new mate. Nowadays, single mothers are plentiful and these should also be supported until they can get married.

Orphans/Fatherless – Children under the age of 18 that are without one or both parents are considered orphans in our society and will have tremendous difficulty providing for their daily needs and in most cases cannot work or earn enough to sustain themselves.

Poor – All through the ages there have been people incapable or without the circumstances to provide for their daily needs. It is easy to judge a poor person and think they are using the money for ill purposes (i.e. Drugs or other addictions), however, that does not relieve us of our duty to help those people. Instead, we aim to provide support in ways that will actually help them and not perpetuate their problems.

Those in Need – While "those in need" include the poor, this category also includes a family or congregational member in need. Methods of help include financial, material, and moral support. We need to do whatever we can to help those members of the body to recover their need/s and provide that love and care that Yeshua has offered to us.

Prisoners - It is important that we extend a hand of help to prisoners through showing them the path to salvation and visiting them in their darkest hour.
